BACKGROUND
I am a self-taught artist, published photographer, writer and teacher. I have been passionate about photography and writing since Riverdale High School where I was a contributing writer for the school newspaper. In partnership with The Toronto Economic Development and tourism I was commissioned to do murals and advertising and in addition as a visual artist with the Toronto District School Boards I have instructed students and facilitated large scale pojects. As an art instructor for the Concurrent Program I taught kindergarten through to grade eight. I have had my photographs presented in two solo exhibits and two festivals.
I have used my camera eye in interior design, sewing, crafts, painting and landscaping. I realized early on that I couldn't enjoy a birthday party, sports event, or a relative's wedding unless I was running around shooting pictures. So it is only natural that I am currently covering life and entertainment for Snap Beaches/Danforth Newspaper as a volunteer event photojournalist. My studio art ranges from scenery landscape, architecture, weddings, portraits, and travel photography to still life.
STYLE
My prints are richly color saturated, vividly sharp, and detailed. I like clear backgrounds that allow the subject to stand out. Often times people ask me if the image is a painting or photograph. There seems to be a natural fusion between the two disciplines. I have been told my fine art photography has a distinctive style.
All prints are individually created, carefully analyzed, edited and signed in my home studio. Light changes the pigment on my canvas known as my lens. Whenever possible I try to take advantage of natural light to enhance or add definition and dimension. The photographs are mounted on embossed white high quality, acid free cardstock.
For me the editing process is also where the magic culminates. My desire is to push beyond the obvious to find that perfect combination. It can be rewarding and challenging but always enlightening. I am taking courses to expand my knowledge and build on experiences.
PHILOSOPHY
My mission is to delight, share, tell a story, evoke emotion, inspire, capture the unexpected and encourage reflection.
Every aspect of the shot is important to me. Focusing on quality image creation, meeting clients needs, and achieving creative results in a studio environment is the goal. The first stage to taking well- conceived images is understanding composition the elements of art and design while experimenting and staying innovative. The second is finding the optimal technical combination. The third component to taking images is having a passionate eye. I consider this the signature component and one I strive to maintain above anything else. I try to not just take a picture of what someone looks like but rather who they are. I believe that flexibility and collaboration are essential when working in the community. I try to focus on integrity, communication and seeking the best dimension for my subject. Many of my clients have become lifelong friends.
LOCATION
I live in the vibrant and cosmopolitan area of Toronto known as Riverdale. Living in its close proximity to the Beaches District, Cabbagetown, Todmorden and Harbourfront allows me to capture the grandeur, simplicity and unspoiled beauty of nature. In the last seven years I have ventured further south to photograph the breath taking Caribbean landscape and tropical wildlife. Through my nature images I hope to increase awareness and promote conservation for our captivating but fragile planet. Every year I give a percentage of my proceeds to WWF Foundation and Because I Am A Girl.
